Why does mankind feel the need to claim and posess?
Hm… probably because it’s a useful trait from an evolutionary standpoint. Folks who don’t look out for their own interests (and owning things so you can use them/get food from them/hunt them/whatever is definitely in your best interest) probably don’t survive much.
Why does the cost of living rise?
Same reason we have inflation, whatever that is.
After gaining power, what else does one get?
Temptation toward corruption. Lots of hangers-on and yes-men. The fear that people who seem to like/love you are faking it so they can be close to someone powerful.
