Maxim Monday: Θεους σεβου

The dangers of doing a regular series without having a backlog: last week was super busy and I didn’t have time to write this up! Argh! Anyway. Back on track this week:

This week’s maxim is Θεους σεβου, translated in the source I’m using as “worship the gods.”

So we have two words:

  • Θεους -This is the plural accusative. of  Θεος, god. So, the gods are the object of the sentence. Makes sense.
  • σεβου – This appears to be the singular aorist (ie, the imperative) of Σεβω, to worship, honor, be religious. Also as passive, to be reverenced. There’s a related word, σεβομαι, to feel awe or fear, to feel shame, be ashamed, be afraid, to worship; pay high regard or respect to.

So once again, I think the translation in my source is pretty solid. There’s the added connotation of honoring the gods in a religious fashion.

Personally, I don’t think it’s necessary to do this to live a good life. I know plenty of atheists and irreligious people who are awesome. I also have run across plenty of douchecanoes who worship their god(s) very intensely and regularly.

However: I also know a lot of religious folks for whom deity worship is a major part of their lives. I’d put myself in this category — I have small shrines to various gods in different parts of my home, I do devotional work on a near-daily basis, and so on.

I would say that working with the deities I do improves my life dramatically, so if you’re looking to the maxims as a way to make your life better, I’d say give this one a try! But I certainly wouldn’t automatically say anybody who doesn’t worship the gods (presumably in this case specifically those of classical Greece) is a bad person.

As general maxims go, this one’s a dud for me.

Maxim Monday: Νομω πειθου

Here we are again! This week’s maxim is Νομω πειθου, translated as “Obey the law.”

The two words that make it up are (italics indicate quotation from Liddell & Scott’s Greek English Lexicon):

  • Νομω – dative of Νομος – anything assigned or apportioned: an usage, custom, convention; a positive enactment, law, ordinance; at Athens, Νομοι was the name given to Solon’s laws, in contradistinction to those of Draco, which were called θεσμοι.
  • πειθου – 2nd pers. imperative of πειθομαι – here, I actually couldn’t find the word in my lexicon, wtf? Thankfully, my old textbook, Reading Greek from Cambridge University Press, came through: “believe, trust, obey (+dat).”

Since Νομω is in the dative, we are set with “obey” here — but I am intrigued by the connotations. Firstly, the word used for “law” has the added connotation of cultural custom/convention and a positive overlays. You might even say “the good law” instead of just “the law.” Secondly, “obey” isn’t just obedience, it’s got connotations of belief and trust as well.

So, I might translate this as “put your trust in the good laws.”

I’d also argue that this maxim doesn’t preclude civil disobedience or working within a democratic system to change laws you feel are unjust. You don’t have to obey all laws to follow this — just positive ones. So if you believe in democracy, you shouldn’t overthrow the government via a military coup to change the laws you don’t like, is what I’m getting here. You should put your trust in the good laws, and follow them as you work to change the not-so-good ones.

As a proponent of civil disobedience and other nonviolent protest, and of voting, I am totally down with this maxim.

Maxim Monday: Επου θεω

Technically it’s Pagan Values Blogging Month, which I’m not officially doing this year. My friend Niki has been going through some of the Delphic Maxims over on her blog (which, if you don’t read, you really should!!) for quite a while, as have some other pagan bloggers, and I’ve thought about doing it — but it wasn’t until I found myself digging out my old Greek dictionary and textbook from college to look at the original of the maxim she did last Monday that I realized no, I really do want to do this. Me and my decade-old Classical Greek are gonna take a stab at first translating/analyzing the words of the maxims and then reacting to them. (If you find my comment on her entry you’ll see I disagree with the translation provided for the maxim she was looking at)

So here we go!

The first maxim in the list here (which is the one I’m using) is: Επου θεω. Loosely transliterated, that’s epoo theaw.

Now, θεω is easy – that’s the dative singular form of θεον, which is “god.”

Επου is the present imperative of the verb επομαι — which means “follow” and is related to the verb επω, be engaged, attend, obey, understand. So, “Follow god” is a decent translation, I’d say.

But what does that mean? The ancient Greeks had multiple gods, for one thing, but this just means “a god.” NOT “God,” in a monotheistic sense. I might actually say the meaning is more “engage with the divine” or “follow the divine,” which is definitely a sentiment I can get behind. I have multiple shrines in my home for various deities. I say prayers and make offerings to them, and generally try to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship with them.

I’d say that having a relationship with (a) god, however one perceives him/her/it to be, is a good thing. I am down with this maxim, for sure.

15 Days of Favorite Things: Day Ten

10 Favorite Fictional Characters

Oh man, this is going to be a really hard one. How do I narrow it down to just ten? Jeez, I could probably do ten vampires alone! *weeps bitterly* Maybe I can cheat a little?

  1. Lord Havelock Vetinari, Patrician of Ankh-Morpork and his foil, Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch.
  2. Hannibal Lecter, in any of his incarnations, but especially in the Bryan Fuller television show. I’m actually not as fond of his foil, Will Graham, if only because the poor little guy is so frickin’ helpless.
  3. Don Simon Ysidro from Barbara Hambly’s Those Who Hunt the Night. He’s a very realistically-written ancient vampire.
  4. Prime Deven O’Donnell – he somehow manages to be both vulnerable and terrifying in a Machiavellian sort of way. Dianne Sylvan is a damn fine writer, and I am thhiiiiiiissss close to flying out to Texas and filling her with various coffee beverages until she finishes the next book. WANT BOOK NOW PLZ KTHXBAI
  5. Methos, from Highlander: The Series. Even when the scripts were so-so, Peter Wingfield’s performance was never less than stellar. It’s no surprise that the writers changed their minds about killing him off and kept him around. :)
  6. Samwise  Gamgee, the only person in all of Middle Earth to ever surrender the One Ring willingly. Sam’s the reason the mission succeeded — without him, Frodo would never have made it even halfway to Mt. Doom. Furthermore, Sam’s the only thing that makes the Mordor sections of the book tolerable for me (I really loathe whiny characters, and Frodo is a great big whiner for that whole series of chapters. Ugh.).
  7. Kyle in Party Down. He seems like a shallow, vapid twit, and he is — but he’s also basically a good guy. He’s one of the only people on the show who hasn’t either given up on life or let themselves slide into being a horrible person one way or another.
  8. Tony Stark, mostly in the MCU rather than in the comics. I’m a sucker for guys like him — brilliant, snarky, well-dressed.
  9. Agent Coulson in the MCU. Quiet, unassuming, but can kick your ass and take you down with whatever is at hand. Unflappable, but also a totally geeky fanboy at heart. Lurve.
  10. Darth Vader, mostly in the original first film (now “A New Hope”). Mysterious, powerful, scary as shit. My kinda guy.
