Every year there are a few Cinequest films I don’t care for, but it’s rare that I find one excruciating to sit through. “The Blind” is one of those few. It’s hard to tell if the acting is universally flat on purpose or not, but either way it makes it hard to care about the characters. Marcus and Kate are a couple whose relationship is outwardly perfect — he spends his days at his office designing buildings while she stays home and tends to his every need. Their lack of communication and apparent soullessness (I think you can count the times either of them smiles in the film on one hand) make it unsurprising when things begin to fall apart. I was prepared to find the film merely unpleasant until the addition of the old familiar “rape is just another way to say I love you” trope, which pushed it into my black books. Taken as a horror film about two people whose relationship brings out the worst in them, it’s effective. As entertainment, it was definitely not my cup of tea.
