Mr. 3000

Originally written for The Milpitas Post. Directed by: Charles Stone III Starring: Bernie Mac, Angela Basset, Michael Rispoli, Brian J. White, Ian Anthony Dale Rated: Rated PG-13 for sexual content and language. Parental Notes: This is a good movie for teens and preteens, although some parents may find the good-natured swearing and mild sexuality objectionable.

Shaun of the Dead

Originally written for The Milpitas Post. Directed by: Edgar Wright Starring: Simon Pegg, Kate Ashfield, Nick Frost, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy Rated: R for zombie violence/gore and language. Parental Notes: There is a lot of gore in this, some of it quite disturbing. Provided your teen can handle blood and guts and has a wicked sense of humor, they’ll like it. Otherwise, they’d be best off checking out a zombie-free romantic comedy.

Cellular

Originally written for The Milpitas Post. Directed by: David R. Ellis Starring: Chris Evans, Kim Bassinger, Jason Statham, William H. Macy Rated: PG-13 for violence, terror situations, language and some sexual references. Parental Notes: This is a fairly intense PG-13 film, and may be way to intense for preteens. Teens will doubtless enjoy the humor-action mix.

THX-1138: The Director’s Cut

Originally written for The Milpitas Post Directed by: George Lucas Starring: Robert Duvall, Maggie McOmie, Donald Pleasance, Don Pedro Colley Rated: R for some sexuality/nudity Parental Notes: This dreamlike film is probably too odd for most preteens and it contains sexual material which while not terribly explicit may be considered inappropriate for youngsters.

Hero

Directed by: Zhang Yimou Starring: Jet Li, Daoming Chen, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Maggie Cheung Rated: PG-13 for stylized martial arts violence and a scene of sensuality. Parental Notes: The violence in this movie is all heavily stylized and largely bloodless. This should be fine for preteens and up, although more mature kids will appreciate the philosophy more.

Exorcist: The Beginning

Originally written for The Milpitas Post. Directed by: Renny Harlin Starring: Stellan Skarsgard, Izabella Scorupco, James D’Arcy Rated: R for strong violence and gore, disturbing images and rituals, and for language including some sexual dialogue. Parental Notes: This movie is rated R, but could be NC-17 for some pf the material shown. Numerous violent and disgusting images abound here, and this is not material for the faint of heart, let alone youngsters.

Collateral

Originally written for The Milpitas Post Directed by: Michael Mann Starring: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith Rated: R for violence and language. Parental Notes: This film is rated

The Village

Review originally written for The Milpitas Post Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Bryce Dallas Howard, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody Rated: PG-13 for a scene of violence and frightening situations. Parental Notes:

The Bourne Supremacy

Originally written for The Milpitas Post Directed by: Paul Greengrass Starring: Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Joan Allen, Brian Cox Rated: PG-13, for violence and intense action, and brief language Parental Notes: Teens and preteens who enjoyed the first movie will doubtless like this one. It is almost certainly too intense for youngsters.

I, Robot

Directed by: Alex Proyas Starring: Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Alan Tudyk, James Cromwell Rated: PG-13 for intense stylized action, and some brief partial nudity. Parental Notes: This is a PG-13 movie that deserves its rating – the violence, while stylized, is still violence. It’s not gruesome or lascivious by any means, but youngsters may find it too intense. Teens and mature preteens will no doubt love it.
